They take commencement seriously here. And yes, there was indeed cannon fire at 7am. I lost count of how many shots, but more than a dozen. The cannon (a Howitzer-looking thing on an older carriage) was driven right past the hotel while we were eating breakfast.

funny, i was just listening yesterday to sarah vowell's piece on bonding with her father over them setting off his home made cannon~~
Yes, I enjoyed that piece, and felt no small amount of empathy with her! But wait for it... there were lots more cannons...
